Although this appears to be a simple maths question, this brainteaser has stumped the internet.
A debate has erupted over the correct answer to the problem, which reads: 18 – 6 ÷ 3/4 + 1 = ?
Now unlike some of the maths questions flooding Facebook that have more than one correct answer, there is only one answer to this – and all you need to really need to know to get it right is how to use the order of operations correctly.
In this case, the order of operations says that we must resolve division before addition or subtraction. This means we must calculate the value of 6÷3/4 before we calculate anything else.
6 ÷ 3/4 = 8 so, the equation becomes 18 – 8 +1 = 11.
The answer is 11.
